I think one of the greatest of metaphysical poems is Henry Vaughan’s masterpiece “The Night.” The poem takes as its inspiration the scene from the third chapter of John, Nicodemus visiting Jesus by night....
The veil between the worlds is thin,
Bright to dark the seasons turn,
Green Man's fire in the Jack O'Lantern,
Light above now shines within. Come dance in the circle of Sa'win,
Buds of Beltane burnished in frost.
The autumn is filled with pumpkins
prayers for miles
God's endless smiles
on cool breezes shines high rise's of many colors
with the leaves dance
on the ground
in the sky
with autumns wing's flies a great season
an inspiring reason
It can be a bit intimidating to get started. That may be true in whatever it is that you’re doing, but especially if you’re creating art. That blank canvas… So much possibility.
Possibility — or pressure?
